2017 Pinot Noir
Storied land. Proven ground. With generations of experience farming the vines in Napa Valley, the Renteria Family has finally arrived as owners of the Brown Ranch. The deed to this historic property offers an opportunity to realize a lifelong dream of vineyard ownership and most importantly, to tell a winemaking family’s complete story from farm to bottle.
Our estate vineyard Renteria Brown Ranch is nestled in the Napa Los Carneros AVA on the southern curve of Old Sonoma Road. The vines were planted in 1992 on various combinations of rootstocks and Pinot Noir clones. For our Tres Perlas Pinot Noir we select blocks featuring clones 115 and 667 growing in haire-loam soils with 9%-12% slopes. With the cool breezes coming from the bay this vineyard parcel is idyllic for growing Pinot Noir. We utilize a double-guyot system with bilateral cordons and vertical shoot positions for modified trellis management and trim our yields to an average of 2.25 tons per acre. The vines are cane-pruned for small berries, tighter clusters, and lower yields. The 2016 vintage offered ideal weather—dry and temperate with few heat spikes— for hastened yet predictable growing events. Harvest was the exact same week as the year before and on September 4th we were greeted with beautifully ripened fruit ready to pick.
Native yeast and native malolactic methods are used to express vineyard character.
The wine was aged for 18 months in 50% New French Oak from Francois Freres in Burgundy. The finished wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered after 18 months in barrel.
