2014 Chardonnay, Brown Ranch
Los Carneros, Napa Valley
Brown Ranch, Los Carneros, Napa Valley
The grapes for this Chardonnay are from the Brown Ranch vineyard in the Napa Los Carneros AVA just off of Old Sonoma Road. The vines were planted in 1992 on 3309 rootstock with Dijon clones 95 in Haire loam soils with 9% slopes. This vineyard parcel is perfectly suited for growing Chardonnay, with the cool breezes coming from the bay. It utilizes bilateral cordon and vertical shoot positioning for trellis management and yields average 3.5 tons per acre. The 2014 vintage endured the continuing drought as well as the South Napa earthquake. Still, the ideal weather—dry and temperate with few heat spikes—made for hastened yet predictable growing events. Harvest was slightly earlier than usual with beautifully ripened fruit ready to pick in early September.
